2018 is a new year so that means new trends, new business ideas and new services! Business is a competitive industry and it will only become more competitive in the upcoming year, so to get ahead of the game, it is only right to see what the latest trends will be, especially in social media.

 

Social media is becoming a key marketing technique to showcase your business and it’s now very rare to find a company that is not on any form of social media platform, its almost unheard of and if that is the case, you are losing out on many potential business opportunities. It is evident that social media platforms are growing considerably by the year, as statistics show that in 2017 (based on daily usage), 76% of adults used Facebook, 51% used Instagram, 42% used Twitter and 18% used LinkedIn (Sprout Social, 2017). Instagram grew considerably over a six-month period in 2016 by 100 million users.

 

So, what are the predicted social media trends for this year and why social media is vital to enhance businesses in 2018…

  • Brands and customers are connecting more on social media, through tagging companies to include compliments or potential feedback! This is more common among the millennials. Brands are realising the huge impact of social media engagement and are now trying to connect and answer their customer’s questions- this has been hugely effective in building a solid customer base.                                                                                                                                                                 

  • 2018 will see an increased emphasis in video content rather than pictures for marketing purposes. It is argued that it will effectively engage the target audience much easier. However, it is important to make sure that the video content you produce is closely aligned with your brand image and connects with your users. Create videos that are based around your customers to interest them.                                                                                                                                                 

  • Chatbots are becoming a key part of business to make customer service faster. Chatbots give brands/companies the chance to interact with their audience and send personalised messages directly to their customers. These make companies more accessible and allows people to get their questions/queries/ issues answered quickly.  

 

Brand Partnership/ Social Media Stories…

Influencers in your industry can be key to building your following and promote your services to a larger audience. Influencer marketing is going to be a large thing in 2018. Consumers like the authenticity from influencers and value their opinions. This can be posted to their pages or it may appear on their stories. This is becoming an increasing trend with Facebook and Instagram, with Snapchat also being another platform. Over 200 million people use Instagram stories each month (Entrepreneur, 2017). People who follow a lot of accounts don’t take the time to see each new post in their feed, however, it is a lot easier to just quickly watch someone’s story. This can be used to encourage users to go directly to your page and see what it is you have to offer.

 

Live Content and Videos…

This will be used more through social media to get their followers excited and engaged. This is available through platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, where you can do a live video and people can join and watch the video. This has proved to be effective in 2017 and will continue to remain strong in 2018. Video is still and is predicted to remain the most popular type of content. Videos tend to have the highest engagement in comparison to written posts. This has slowly been introduced through platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, where they have video features like live videos and stories.

 

Social media is vital to any company in the 21st Century business world and it will continue to grow; therefore, it will be exciting to see what will arise in 2018 and furthermore what 2019 holds for social media!
