What are Human Factors?
It’s quite simple to describe, “Human factors are the behaviour of people operating systems”. However, to analyse human factors is more complex. An understanding of what has happened is not enough; an understanding of why it has happened will go much further.

By using the Generic Error Modelling System (GEMS) we can help you analyse and categorise serious events and mitigate potential serious events. Categorisation means identifying how Human Failure has contributed to a situation and why the Human Failure existed.
By identifying how Human Failure has existed when undertaking out specific tasks we can carry out trend analysis into serious events. The Trend Analysis will act as a precursor to introducing specific training modules designed to mitigate future events.
QSS has designed a number of training programmes for clients within the Railway Industry that have aided organisations to reach their key performance indicators through simulation training. For example, QSS will design a scenario that will simulate a typical Driving Cab event enabling candidates to experience the effects of their actions. This breeds a better awareness of contributory factors to serious events.
- Organisational Health Check
Determining what the workforce perception of an organisation is has helped to analyse what human factor influences need consideration. For example, a person’s acts or omissions may be due to job or individual reasons but will more likely be due to organisational failures. QSS will design a bespoke questionnaire for respondents that will enable us to analyse what ‘cultural’ issues exist and how they can be improved.
